Monthly jazz steel in Portland Oregon!

Post by Christopher Woitach »

I just got some great news - Jo Bar, a nice little club in Portland, OR that actually asked me to put together a jazz steel group, sent me an email yesterday wanting us to play Wednesday, April 27, 7-10 pm, and then every 3rd Wednesday after that - I’m so pleased!

The Christopher Woitach Steel Quartet is me, John Moak on trombone (except for 4/27, David Evans on reeds), Tim Gilson on fretless electric bass, and Charlie Doggett on drums. We sometimes refer to the group as “3 slidey things and one bangy thing”, or “the band where only the drummer is in tune “….

I’m very lucky, all kidding aside, all world class players making me sound better.

Good for you Christopher. It's great what you are doing with the pedal steel guitar. Putting it out there in the jazz context. I'm glad and envious at the same time that you have been able to take to the instrument like this is such a short time. I know that your jazz background and time spent with the instrument has helped yield these nice results.

Congratulations!

I wish I was in Portland so that I could come and see your performance. Break a leg!

You know what Bill Kirchen always says about the steel guitar and the trombone? "The only two instruments not found in nature." (BTW, he's no John Moak but he's not a bad trombonist himself...)

Well, we only use minor spoons, usually, but for you, we’d make an exception!
